SIDEZ Strategic Plan

GOAL # 4
STRONGER UNITY/SENSE OF COMMUNITY - Believing that a strong sense of unity, community pride and optimism for the future result from people working and playing together in a positive manner, each year of zone designation, at least 300 people, reflecting the diversity of the community, will plan or participate in new volunteer community building activities.

OBJECTIVE #1: Develop programs and services to unite residents within the Southernmost Illinois Delta Empowerment Zone.

Strategies
a. Develop EZ region-wide clean up and image building campaign.
1. Implement "Operation Facelift Program," which will provide for the demolition, clean up and maintenance of abandoned industrial sites, brown fields, buildings, and empty lots.
2. Implement "Take Pride In The Zone," a clean up and image improvement and education program.
b. Provide support to the Senior Citizens Nutritional Centers zone-wide to enable continuation of services.
c. Provide leverage funds for the construction and/or renovations of Community/
Historical/Cultural/Recreational Sites.
d. Research model programs such as "Habitat for Humanity" and "Christmas in April" for possible
implementation.
e. Research model programs such as Neighborhood Conservation Program, which includes Neighborhood
Watch and Block Clubs.
f. Support the expansion of recreational and cultural programming in the zone.
g. Develop zone-wide special events to bring people together to build a sense of community.
h. Sponsor training programs to assist community members in strengthening their leadership, organization, and
project management skills. Help people learn how to take an idea from dream to reality.

OBJECTIVE #2: Improve public access areas including public buildings, sidewalks and lighting in the Southernmost Illinois Delta Empowerment Zone.

Strategies
a. Develop "Operation Cornerstone" – a program designed to provide matching funds for necessary public
building improvements.
b. Implement Downtown Revitalization Matching Funds for physical improvements within municipalities.
 Main Street Renovations – City of Vienna
 Assess needs in other municipalities.
c. Construct or repair sidewalks.
d. Establish state/local partnerships to encourage maintenance of state owned property.
